Palm Sunday
Readings: Is 50:4-7; Phil 2:6-11; Lk 22:14-23:56 or 23:1-49 (Passion)
From the Gospel: “Jesus said to them: ‘I have greatly desired to eat this Passover with you before I
suffer’” (Lk 22:15). Thought for the day: At the time of Jesus huge numbers of pilgrims, up to one hundred thousand of them, came to Jerusalem for the Passover because, according to Jewish belief, the Passover was not only a remembrance of the Exodus. It was also a festival of hope. The Messiah was to come on Easter to liberate his people from all their troubles. The excitement, then, was great in Jerusalem. Will the longed-for Saviour come this year maybe? Jesus comes into his city, into the temple, his Father’s house, without any hullabaloo. Only a few people notice his arrival. He comes, not with great pomp, but modestly, riding on a donkey. It is still the same today. Jesus usually comes into our lives unspectacularly. But his coming brings joy and hope. Through faith we can receive him. Christopher Cardinal Schönborn
