Our Congregation

The Congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill has sprung from the Trappist monastery of Mariannhill founded by Abbot Francis Pfanner in South Africa in 1882. The Apostolic See separated the monastery from the Trappist Order in a decree of February 2, 1909, and thereby prepared the way for the formation of a new Religious Missionary Community. The Congregation is a clerical institute of pontifical right. It is subject to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
